Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Spy Shots Capture Crossover at the Nürburgring

Earlier this month, our spy photographers captured a supercharged Hyundai Ioniq 5 for the first time. We thought it was the hottest N variant of the brand’s all-electric crossover, and there are plenty of clues to back this claim, which is only made clearer in a new batch of photos from spying. The new photos show the vaulted crossover testing at the Nürburgring circuit.

The crossover in the new photos bears the same license plate as the test vehicle we spied on earlier, and it also has the same performance ratings. The Ioniq 5 has no camouflage and there are some notable differences between this one and the standard variant. The 5 is lower, probably on a revised suspension – more rigid – which improves handling. The wide, meaty low profile tires help fill the wheel arches. The wider stance means Hyundai had to add small fender flares to accommodate the wheels.

Hyundai hasn’t hinted at what powertrain might be lurking in the N, although it’s not a complete mystery. The Kia EV6 shares its platform with the Hyundai, and the Kia has a high powered GT version that delivers 576 horsepower (430 kilowatts). The platform would be able to handle up to 600 hp (447 kilowatts), so the Hyundai could get a few more ponies to set it apart from its sister Kia.

There’s a chance it won’t get the nickname of N as Hyundai hasn’t said if such a model is in development, although it fits the badge perfectly. The sportier stance of the crossover, beefy tires and big brakes indicate that this Ioniq 5 offers more than the standard model. How much more? We will have to wait. The Ioniq 5 is on track to start arriving this fall, so we expect an Ioniq 5 N to debut next year. He could debut as a 2023 model.
